The current programme (2007-2013) aims to promote active citizenship and to reinforce the feeling of belonging to the European Union, to improve mutual tolerance and comprehension and to encourage the emergence of a European identity.

The programme is implemented in four ways :
 “Active citizens for Europe” : town twinnings, citizens’ projects and support measures ;
 An “Active civil society in Europe” : structural support for think tanks and civil society organisations operating at the European level ; support for projects initiated by civil society organisations ;
 “Together for Europe” : events with a high degree of public visibility, surveys and information and dissemination tools ;
 “A European Active Memory” : protection of the main sites and archives relating to the deportations and commemoration of all victims of Nazism and Stalinism.

The programme budget for 2007-2013 amounts to 215 million euros.
